HTET TGT Music Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility
HTET TGT Music is one of the more specialised papers. The subject-specific section of 60 marks is not only about theoretical definitions (संगीत, ध्वनि, नाद, श्रुति, स्वर) but also named raga recognition, tala structure and even the biographies of specific musicians and the classical texts that formed Indian music theory. The exam weights the theoretical and biographical portions equally, and strong-performing candidates sometimes underprepare these sections.
This guide covers the HTET TGT Music syllabus exactly as BSEH has structured it, along with the exam weightage and the eligibility conditions for this paper.

Common Syllabus for HTET TGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)
These three sections are identical across every TGT subject and make up 90 of the 150 marks.
Child Development and Pedagogy
Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 11-16 age group — development and its relationship with learning, the influence of heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky. It also includes child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, individual learner differences, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.
Languages — Hindi and English
Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, acquisition and the use of multilingual classroom resources.
General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude
Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.
HTET TGT Music: Subject-Specific Syllabus
BSEH organises this 60-mark section into three parts, each pairing theory with the biographies of relevant musicians.
(क) संगीतिक परिभाषाएँ और सिद्धांत — Musical Definitions and Theory
Core definitions: संगीत (music), ध्वनि (sound), नाद (tone), श्रुति (microtone), स्वर (note), सप्तक (octave), and the definition of राग along with राग के नियम (the rules governing ragas) and राग की जातियाँ (raga classifications). थाट की परिभाषा व नियम (the definition and rules of thaat). Definitions of गीत, लक्षण गीत and सरगम गीत, and an overview of उत्तर व दक्षिण भारतीय संगीत पद्धतियाँ (North and South Indian music systems).
This part also covers तानपुरा का परिचय (an introduction to the tanpura), मानव जीवन में संगीत का स्थान (the place of music in human life), शब्द ज्ञान व सुगम संगीत की विधाएँ (light music forms), and हरियाणवी संस्कृति व लोकगीतों का ज्ञान (knowledge of Haryanvi culture and folk songs)—along with भजन, राष्ट्रीय गान, देशभक्ति गीत and वंदे मातरम् गीत (devotional and patriotic songs and the national song).
Musician biographies in this part: तानसेन, सदारंग and अदारंग, पं० जसराज, and किशोरी अमोनकर. Classical texts: संगीत रत्नाकर and नाट्यशास्त्र (by भरतमुनि). Theoretical raga knowledge is tested on specific named ragas: भीमपलासी, वृंदावनी सारंग, खमाज, भैरव, यमन, दुर्गा, भूपाली, बिलावल, हमीर, काफी and भैरवी.
(ख) ताल, लय और वाद्य ज्ञान — Tala, Laya and Instrument Knowledge
Core terms: ताल, लय, सम, खाली, विभाग, मात्रा, आवर्तन, आमद, मोहरा and तिहाई, along with the definition of अलंकार. Named talas: एकताल, चौताल, रूपक, तीन ताल, दादरा, झपताल and कहरवा. Recognition of tabla bols (the spoken syllables representing drum strokes): धा, ति, धिं, किट, न, तिरकिट, तू, ग and ता.
This part also covers the classification and introduction of instruments — specifically the description of the parts of the tabla (with diagrams) and the structure and tuning of the tabla and pakhawaj. Musician biographies here: जाकिर हुसैन (Zakir Hussain) and अल्ला रक्खा खाँ (tabla player).
(ग) राग-संगीत की व्याख्या एवं शैली — Raga Interpretation and Style
Core concepts: आरोह-अवरोह (ascending-descending movement), पकड़ (the catch phrase that identifies a raga), वादी, संवादी, अनुवादी and विवादी स्वर (the hierarchy of notes within a raga), and the definitions of स्थाई, अंतरा, आलाप and तान. This part also distinguishes शुद्ध, छायालग and संकीर्ण राग (pure, shaded and mixed ragas) and covers रजाखानी गत, गायन व वादन शैलियाँ (vocal and instrumental styles) and variations in स्वर. It closes with a comparison of language, tala and raga classification between उत्तर व दक्षिण भारतीय शैली (North and South Indian styles).
Musician biographies here cover instrumentalists: पं० रविशंकर (Ravi Shankar), अन्नपूर्णा देवी (Annapurna Devi), पं० शिव कुमार शर्मा (Shivkumar Sharma) and हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया (Hariprasad Chaurasia). Named instruments: सितार, सरोद, वायलिन, दिलरुबा/इसराज, बांसुरी, मेंडोलिन, गिटार and सारंगी.
(घ) विषय संबंधित शिक्षाशास्त्र — Subject-Related Pedagogy
Methods of teaching music, the objectives of music education, and the effective use of music in the classroom.
The first three parts combine theory with the specific biography of musicians, so it might be worth preparing them together rather than separately. BSEH tends to frame questions that relate a raga, tala or instrument directly to the musician associated with it.

Who is permitted to apply for HTET TGT Music? Qualification Details
You need to satisfy both of the following:
- B.A. with 50% marks in music as an elective/honours subject with music as a teaching subject in any one of the following: BTC / JBT / D. Ed./D. El. Ed., or B. Ed./B. Ed. (Special Education) recognised by NCTE norms OR 4-year B. El. Ed. with at least 50% marks in music OR 4-year Integrated BA-B. Ed. with not less than 50% marks in music.
- Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject in Matric, or Hindi as a subject in higher education.
You do not need to take any extra subjects – music as your elective or an honours subject at graduation level will be fine, as long as it is combined with the appropriate teaching qualification.
Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates
Where the minimum qualifying mark is 50%, SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get a 5% relaxation, bringing it down to 47.5%. Where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75%, per the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.
A qualification detail worth checking twice
Only teacher-education diplomas or degrees recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) are counted. The Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B. Ed.Ed. (Special Education) routes need recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi, instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does TGT Music test vocal and instrumental knowledge equally?
Yes. The first part (क) is more of vocal and raga theory, the second part (ख) is of tala and percussion instruments, and the third part (ग) deals with both vocal raga interpretation and melodic instruments such as sitar and sarod — none of the three can be skipped.
Are musician biographies actually tested, or just background reading?
They are included in BSEH’s own syllabus structure, alongside each theory section. Tansen, Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain and others are identified as part of the testable content, not as supplementary material.
Is knowledge of Haryanvi folk music included in this paper?
Yes. Part (क) explicitly includes knowledge of Haryanvi culture and folk songs, alongside the broader North and South Indian classical systems.
How many named ragas should I prepare in detail?
The syllabus names eleven ragas for theoretical study in part (क) — भीमपलासी, वृंदावनी सारंग, खमाज, भैरव, यमन, दुर्गा, भूपाली, बिलावल, हमीर, काफी and भैरवी — each of which is expected to be known in full शास्त्रीय परिचय (classical detail).
In this syllabus BSEH has tightened the link between theory, named ragas/talas and musician biographies so much that one consolidated reference table (raga or tala name, its defining characteristics and the associated musician) will serve your revision better than studying the three parts as separate topics.
