HTET PGT Physical Education Syllabus 2026: Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

HTET PGT Physical Education Syllabus 2026: Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

PGT Physical Education goes well beyond TGT Physical Education’s already broad scope — it adds dedicated sections on sociological foundations, physical education for children with special needs (Divyang/CWSN), research methodology, and skill tests for specific sports like badminton, basketball, hockey and volleyball. It’s also the only PGT subject requiring two separate qualifications at once — an M.A./M.P.Ed. and a B.P.Ed./D.P.Ed.

This guide covers the HTET PGT Physical Education syllabus exactly as BSEH has structured it, along with the exam weightage and the eligibility conditions for this paper.

HTET PGT Physical Education Exam Pattern and Weightage 2026

The paper has 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks, completed in two and a half hours, with one mark per question and no negative marking.

Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development.

HTET PGT Physical Education: Subject-Specific Syllabus

The 60-mark subject-specific section spans history and foundations, biological and sociological science, psychology, yoga, and sports management, training and research.

History, Biological and Sociological Foundations

The history of Physical Education in India across the pre- and post-Independence eras, and Physical Education in Ancient Greece, Rome, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Russia. The biological basis of Physical Education — growth and development, heredity and environment, body types, and personality classification per Kretschmer’s and Sheldon’s systems.

The sociological foundation of Physical Education — sports and socialisation, and the role of family, society and school in participation in games and sports. This sociological focus is more developed here than at TGT level.

Health, Anatomy and Physiology

The guiding principles of health and health education, balanced diet and nutrition, health-related fitness, obesity management, and first aid. Communicable diseases — their causes and prevention. The school health programme, personal hygiene, sports injuries and their prevention, postural deformities, sports medicine, physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

Physical Education and sports for children with special needs (CWSN/Divyang), and physical fitness and wellness more broadly. Anatomy and physiology — covering the respiratory, blood circulatory, skeletal, muscular, endocrine and exocrine, digestive, nervous and excretory systems.

Biomechanics, Psychology and Yoga

Ergogenic aids, doping and anti-doping, and the factors influencing sports performance. Kinesiology and biomechanics — joints and their movements, planes and axes, kinetics and kinematics (linear and angular), levers, the muscular analysis of motor movement, the laws of motion, and the principle of equilibrium and force, applied to specific sports activities and fundamental movements like running, jumping, throwing, pulling and pushing.

Psychology and sociology in sports — the learning process, theories and laws of learning, transfer of learning, internal and external motivation, leadership, and the theories and principles of recreation. Yoga education — its history, meaning, Ashtanga Yoga and its components, Surya Namaskar, pranayama, and the Shuddhi Kriyas (Neti, Dhoti, Basti), along with yoga’s role in daily life and as a preventive measure against lifestyle diseases.

Test, Measurement, Sports Management, Training and Research

Test measurement and evaluation — its concepts and principles, and specific skill tests for badminton, basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball and lawn tennis. The measurement of athletics (track and field events), major and minor games, the rules and regulations of sports, sports terminology, current sports affairs in India and globally, sports federations, national and international games (including the Olympic movement), and the Khelo India and Fit India movements, along with ground marking for athletics and other sports.

Sports management — the principles of management, the organisation and functions of sports bodies, intramural and extramural activities, infrastructure and resource management, planning, officiating, and the principles and techniques of teaching and supervision. Sports training — its concepts and principles, periodisation, training methods, technical and tactical preparation, and short- and long-term training programmes, along with the role of media and computer applications in Physical Education and National Sports Awards.

This part closes with research — the nature, scope and types of research, and research methods — plus subject-related pedagogy. Research methodology is a PGT-specific addition not found in the TGT Physical Education syllabus.

Given that PGT Physical Education adds sociological foundations, CWSN-focused content, specific sport skill tests, and research methodology on top of everything already covered at TGT level, candidates moving up should treat these four areas as genuinely new study material rather than assuming TGT-level preparation transfers directly.

Who Is Eligible for HTET PGT Physical Education? Qualification Details

You need to satisfy all of the following:

  1. M.A. Physical Education or M.P.Ed. with at least 50% marks, and a Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) or Diploma in Physical Education (D.P.Ed.), or its equivalent, from a recognised university.
  2. Matric with Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject, or Senior Secondary/Graduation/Post Graduation with Hindi as one of the subjects.
  3. A consistent good academic record.

This is one of the few PGT subjects requiring two separate qualifications simultaneously — both the postgraduate degree (M.A. Physical Education or M.P.Ed.) and the professional physical education qualification (B.P.Ed. or D.P.Ed.) are needed together, rather than one substituting for the other.

What counts as “Good Academic Record”

For direct recruitment, “Good Academic Record” means averaging at least 50% marks across any three of your 10th, 12th, Graduation and Post-Graduation results — but you must separately have at least 50% marks in your Post-Graduation itself.

Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates

Where the minimum qualifying mark is 50%, SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get a 5% relaxation, bringing it to 47.5%. Where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75%, per the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.

A qualification detail worth checking twice

Only a B.Ed.-equivalent course recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) counts where applicable. For the B.Ed. (Special Education) route specifically, the course needs recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PGT Physical Education require both an M.P.Ed. and a B.P.Ed., or just one?

Both. The eligibility condition requires the postgraduate degree (M.A. Physical Education or M.P.Ed.) together with the professional qualification (B.P.Ed. or D.P.Ed.) — neither substitutes for the other.

Is research methodology actually tested, or just background theory?

It’s explicitly listed as its own topic — the nature, scope and types of research, and research methods — within the Sports Management, Training and Research part of the syllabus.

Does PGT Physical Education cover specific sport skill tests?

Yes, named skill tests for badminton, basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball and lawn tennis are explicitly included under Test Measurement and Evaluation — this level of sport-specific testing detail doesn’t appear in the TGT Physical Education syllabus.

Is there content specifically about teaching students with disabilities?

Yes — Physical Education and sports for children with special needs (CWSN/Divyang) is an explicitly named topic, reflecting a more inclusive-education focus than the TGT-level syllabus carries.

Given how much this syllabus has expanded compared to TGT level — sociological foundations, CWSN-focused content, sport-specific skill tests, and research methodology — treat your PGT preparation as a genuinely more advanced paper, and don’t assume your TGT-level revision notes will cover these newer additions.
