HTET 2026 Eligibility Criteria – Educational Qualification, Age Limit & Other Requirements
A candidate searching for HTET eligibility is rarely asking “what is the rule” in the abstract. They are usually asking “does my specific degree count.” That is the question this page tries to answer, level by level, rather than repeating one generic line about needing a teaching qualification.
HTET 2026 Eligibility at a Glance
| Level | Minimum Qualification | Professional Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 (PRT) | Senior Secondary (12th) with at least 50% marks | Two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) |
| Level 2 (TGT) | Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks | B.Ed. or D.El.Ed. |
| Level 3 (PGT) | Master’s degree in the relevant subject with at least 50% marks | B.Ed. |
A 5% relaxation in the minimum qualifying percentage applies to SC, BC, and physically handicapped candidates who hold Haryana domicile. Passing Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject up to Matric level is also a common condition across levels, so check this even if your degree otherwise matches. Visit official website for confirmation bseh.org.in.
Age Limit
The general age band for HTET is 18 to 38 years, calculated as of the cut-off date given in the notification. Reserved categories with Haryana domicile receive the standard age relaxation applied to Haryana government recruitment norms. For a full breakdown by category, our existing HTET Age Limit guide covers the year-wise relaxation table in detail; this page focuses on the qualification side of eligibility.
Where Candidates Actually Get Confused
Can I apply for Level 2 with only a B.Ed. and no D.El.Ed.?
Yes. For Level 2 (TGT), either B.Ed. or D.El.Ed. is accepted as the professional qualification, as long as your degree meets the 50% requirement. You do not need both.
Does my subject in Master’s degree need to match the PGT post I want?
Generally yes. Level 3 (PGT) is subject-specific, so a candidate with a Master’s in Political Science should apply, and later be recruited, against Political Science posts, not against a Biology or Commerce post. This matters more at the recruitment stage than at the HTET stage itself, since HTET checks your subject-level eligibility to sit for that paper.
Can a final-year graduate or postgraduate student apply?
This depends on the exact wording BSEH uses in the current notification. Some HTET cycles have allowed provisional applications from final-year students, subject to producing the final degree later; others have required the degree in hand before applying. Do not assume; check the eligibility clause in the current notification PDF, covered in our HTET 2026 Notification PDF guide, before relying on a rule from a previous cycle.
I studied outside Haryana. Can I still apply?
Yes, HTET is open to candidates from outside Haryana, but domicile-based relaxations in age and qualifying marks apply only to candidates with Haryana domicile. A non-domicile candidate needs to meet the general (non-relaxed) percentage and age condition.
What if my degree is in a “similar” subject rather than an exact match?
This is decided by the board’s own equivalence rules stated in the notification, not by a personal judgment of how close the subjects are. If your case is not a clear match, it is safer to raise a query with BSEH directly before applying rather than paying the fee and risking rejection at the scrutiny stage.
Documents That Prove Your Eligibility
- Mark sheets and certificates for your qualifying degree (10+2, Bachelor’s, or Master’s depending on the level).
- Certificate for your professional qualification (D.El.Ed. or B.Ed.).
- Category certificate, if applying under SC, BC, or PH relaxation.
- Haryana domicile certificate, if claiming a domicile-based relaxation.
- Matric-level Hindi or Sanskrit certificate or mark sheet, where required.
Keep scanned copies ready before you start the application form, since the process is much smoother when you are not searching for a document mid-form.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a maximum number of attempts allowed for HTET?
No. HTET does not cap the number of attempts by age alone, as long as you stay within the notified age band and meet the qualification requirement for the level you choose.
Do I need to clear all three levels together?
No. You can apply for just one level, any two, or all three, depending on which teaching posts you plan to target. Each level is scored and certified independently.
Does a B.Ed. from a distance-education or open university count?
This depends on whether the specific university and course are recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Check the notification’s wording on recognised qualifications, since not every distance B.Ed. programme is treated the same way.
