HTET TGT English Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

HTET TGT English Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

TGT English candidates generally assume that their subject paper will be similar to the Language-II section, which they have already prepared for the common papers. It is not. There is a 60-mark English paper which is subject specific and has a full Literature component. This is tested from the Class 6-10 BSEH syllabus at a level of difficulty that BSEH has specifically said can go up to the undergraduate standard — a step beyond what most candidates would expect from a school-level reading list.

BSEH has also provided the HTET TGT English syllabus in its original form, the exam weightage and eligibility conditions for the paper.

Common Syllabus for HTET TGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)

These three sections are identical across every TGT paper and account for 90 of the 150 marks.

Child Development and Pedagogy

Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 11-16 age group — development and its relationship with learning, the influence of heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky. It also includes child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, individual learner differences, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.

Languages — Hindi and English

Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development. For an English-subject candidate, it’s worth noting that this common Language-II section and the subject-specific English section below test different things — this one is general language proficiency at Class 6-10 level, while the subject-specific section goes deeper into grammar theory and literature.

General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude

Haryana GK (10 marks) covers the state’s history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types — analogies, classification, series and coding-decoding. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.

HTET TGT English: Subject-Specific Syllabus

The 60-mark subject-specific section has three distinct components.

Reading Comprehension and Pedagogy of English

One or two unseen passages (prose or poetry) to assess comprehension, analysis and interpretation. On the pedagogy side: the aims and objectives of teaching English at secondary level, methods and approaches of teaching the language, teaching aids, and the use of ICT in the classroom.

Grammar and Usage

Verb patterns and tenses, sentence analysis and transformation, voice and narration, articles and determiners, primary and modal auxiliaries, idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs, and all parts of speech in detail — noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, interjection and preposition. Basic phonetics is included too: word formation, vowel and consonant sounds, and simple transcription.

Literature

Text-based questions drawn from the prescribed syllabus of the Board of School Education Haryana for Classes VI to X. This is the one part of the TGT English paper where BSEH explicitly states the difficulty can be raised to undergraduate level — meaning literary analysis questions here can go well beyond straightforward recall of plot or character details from the school textbook.

Visit bseh.org.in or htet.eapplynow.com for official Notification & Syllabus 2026

Of the three components, Grammar and Usage has the most rules that can be tested individually, but it is Literature where preparation most often falls short. Simply, candidates assume that a school-level reading list won’t be tested in depth – and BSEH’s own wording says otherwise.

Who Is Eligible for HTET TGT English? Qualification Details

You need to satisfy both of the following:

  1. Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks in English as a compulsory, elective, Core or Honours subject along with English as a teaching subject in one of the following: BTC/JBT/D.Ed./D.El.Ed, or B.Ed./B.Ed. (Special Education) recognised under NCTE norms, or a 4-year B.El.Ed with at least 50% marks in English, or a 4-year integrated BA-B.Ed with at least 50% marks in English.
  2. Matric or above education with Hindi or Sanskrit as one of the subjects

Unlike TGT Science or Social Studies, there is no further subject-combination requirement. English as your compulsory, elective, Core or Honours subject at graduation level is sufficient, so long as it is paired with the relevant teaching qualification.

Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates

For the minimum qualifying mark of 50% the SC, BC and differently-abled candidates are given a relaxation of 5% i.e. 47.5% . The minimum is 45% while the relaxed figure is 42.75% as per Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.

A qualification detail worth checking twice

Only teacher-education diplomas or degrees recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) are included. However, the Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B.Ed. (Special Education) courses require recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Literature component of TGT English based only on NCERT or BSEH’s own textbooks?

It is based on the syllabus prescribed by the Board of School Education Haryana for Classes VI to X specifically and not a generic list of NCERT. So, candidates should prepare from the actual Class 6-10 English textbooks of BSEH and should not assume any overlap with NCERT content.

Why does Literature get tested at undergraduate difficulty if the content is from Class 6-10?

This is exactly what BSEH says in the syllabus itself — the text selection will be within the school-level prescribed syllabus but the depth of analysis required in the questions can be pushed up to UG level. Just like how Mathematics and Science papers increase the difficulty level while keeping content within the Class 6-10 range.

Does English as a “compulsory” subject in graduation count toward eligibility, or does it need to be my elective/Honours subject?

They both qualify. The eligibility wording specifically covers English as a compulsory, elective, Core or Honours subject, so candidates who took it as a compulsory paper alongside a different elective/Honours subject remain eligible.

Can a B.El.Ed graduate apply for TGT English directly?

Yes, provided the 4-year B.El.Ed included at least 50% marks in English, combined with the Hindi/Sanskrit language condition.

The grammar rules are finite and can be tested in a simple way but Literature preparation demands its own dedicated pass through the actual BSEH Class 6-10 textbooks – do not let strong grammar scores on a mock test convince you that reading comprehension and literary analysis are also covered.
