HTET PGT English Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility
This is explicitly mentioned in the syllabus language by BSEH: the literature part of the subject-specific section can be attempted up to postgraduate level, although the text selection still falls within the prescribed syllabus of Classes 9-12. Candidates for PGT English are preparing for the senior-most level of HTET. The PGT English exam is one step ahead of TGT English, whose corresponding cap is undergraduate level – a difference that candidates switching from TGT to PGT preparation often miss.
In this guide, you will learn the complete syllabus for HTET PGT English as prescribed by the BSEH, the weightage of the paper and eligibility criteria for this paper.

- SC and candidates from other states with disabilities: 60% (90 marks)

Common Syllabus for HTET PGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)
These three sections, which account for 90 of the 150 points, are the same for all PGT subjects. Additionally, PGT candidates are tested on theory that is completely absent from the TGT syllabus, making them noticeably more advanced than their TGT counterparts.
Child Development and Pedagogy
Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 14-17 age group. Beyond the standard ground — development and its relationship with learning, heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky — the PGT-level syllabus specifically adds Freud’s Psychosexual Development Theory, Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development, and Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, none of which appear in the TGT Child Development and Pedagogy syllabus. It also covers child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.
Languages — Hindi and English
Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, relevant to the 14-17 age group.
General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude
Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.
HTET PGT English: Subject-Specific Syllabus
The 60-mark section has three components.
Reading Comprehension and Pedagogy of English
One or two unseen passages (prose or poetry) to assess the candidate’s competence in the language — the ability to derive meaning, analyse, and gather information through reading. On the pedagogy side: the aims and objectives of teaching English at the school level, the methods and approaches of teaching the language, and ICT of/for/in education.
Grammar and Usage
Verb patterns and tenses, sentence analysis and transformation, voice and narration, articles and determiners, primary and modal auxiliaries, idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs, and all parts of speech in detail — noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, interjection and preposition. Basic phonetics covers word formation, vowel and consonant sounds, simple transcription, and stress and intonation — the last of which doesn’t appear in the TGT English phonetics syllabus.
Literature
Text-based questions selected from the prescribed syllabus of the Board of School Education Haryana for Classes IX to XII. BSEH explicitly states the difficulty level here may be raised to postgraduate level—the highest difficulty ceiling anywhere in the HTET structure—and a clear signal that Literature deserves depth of preparation well beyond what the Class 9-12 textbooks alone would suggest.

It’s worth treating the preparation period for this paper as longer than a simple “read the prescribed texts” approach would suggest, since PGT difficulty typically runs higher than TGT across all sections, and literature specifically is capped at PG level.
Who Is Eligible for HTET PGT English? Qualification Details
You need to satisfy all of the following:
- A master’s degree in English with a minimum of 50% marks from an accredited university, in addition to a bachelor’s degree. Education from an accredited institution.
- Completion of matriculation with Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject, or senior secondary/graduation/post-graduation with Hindi included as one of the subjects.
- A reliable and commendable academic performance.
TGT English provides the chance to study English as a compulsory, elective, Core or Honours subject at graduation level. PGT English requires English at the postgraduate level along with a B.Ed.
What is a ‘Good Academic Record’?
For direct recruitment, “Good Academic Record” means averaging at least 50% marks across any three of your 10th, 12th, Graduation and Post-Graduation results — but separately you must have at least 50% marks in your Post-Graduation itself (this minimum is higher only for PGT Computer Science, at 55%).
Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates
Where the minimum qualifying mark is 50%, SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get a 5% relaxation, bringing it to 47.5%. Where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75%, per the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.
A qualification detail worth checking twice
Only a B.Ed. recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) counts. For the B.Ed. (Special Education) route specifically, the course needs recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PGT English eligibility accept English as an elective subject at the graduation level, like TGT does?
No. A postgraduate degree in English with at least 50% of the possible points plus a B is specifically required for PGT English. Ed. — Unlike TGT, your graduation subject combination has no bearing on your eligibility for PGT.
How much harder is PGT English Literature compared to TGT English Literature?
The difficulty level of TGT English Literature can be raised to the undergraduate level. The difficulty level of PGT English Literature can be raised to postgraduate level. Both the papers will actually pick their texts from the BSEH school syllabus (Class 6-10 for TGT, Class 9-12 for PGT).
What additional child development theories appear only at the PGT level?
Freud’s Psychosexual Development Theory, Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development, and Bandura’s Social Learning Theory — none of these three appear in the TGT-level Child Development and Pedagogy syllabus.
Is “Good Academic Record” the same as meeting the minimum post-graduation percentage?
No, it’s an extra requirement. Both are required: a minimum of 50% on average for any three of your 10th, 12th, graduation, and post-graduation scores, as well as a minimum of 50% on its own.
With PGT difficulty pitched higher in nearly every section, not just literature, those moving up from TGT-level preparation should approach this as a genuinely harder paper, instead of the same content at a slightly later career stage.
