Common Syllabus for HTET PGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)
These three sections are identical across every PGT subject and make up 90 of the 150 marks.
Child Development and Pedagogy
Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 14-17 age group. Alongside the standard ground — development and its relationship with learning, heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky — this PGT-level syllabus specifically adds Freud’s Psychosexual Development Theory, Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development, and Bandura’s Social Learning Theory. This overlaps conceptually with some of the child-development content in the subject-specific section below, but the two are tested from different angles — one pedagogical, one Home-Science-specific.
Languages — Hindi and English
Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, relevant to the 14-17 age group.
General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude
Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.
HTET PGT Home Science: Subject-Specific Syllabus
The 60-mark section spans three broad areas.
Food, Nutrition and Public Health
Food and its functions, nutrition, nutrients, health and nutritional status, and malnutrition. Food and personal hygiene, balanced diets, basic food groups, meal planning, and clinical nutrition and dietetics. Health indicators of family, community and society, and nutrition, health and welfare across different life stages.
This section also covers public health and nutrition, nutritional programmes in India, food processing and technology, food preservation, and food quality and safety — including food standards and regulations in India, along with international organisations and agreements in the area of food standards, and food safety management systems.
Human Development and Family Resource Management
The concepts and principles of growth and development, and the factors affecting them — including play, the stages of the life span, and age-specific milestones from birth to 3 years across physical, motor, social, emotional, cognitive and language domains. Understanding adolescence, early childhood care and education (ECCE), and the management of support services, institutions and programmes for children, youth and the elderly.
Family — its types, functions, and its role in developing holistic family values. Family resources, their types and characteristics, and the management of time, energy, money, work simplification and waste. Hospitality management, consumer education and protection, and measures of safety and emergency management, including first aid.
Textiles, and Modern Home Science Professions
Fibre classification and characteristics, fabric manufacturing, yarn processing, and the fabrics found around us, including the traditional textiles of India. Clothing — its functions and selection for different age groups — and the care and maintenance of fabrics and apparel at home and in institutions, including stain removal. Design for fabric and apparel, and fashion design and merchandising.
This part closes with a set of modern, professionally oriented topics: the concept and field of Home Science along with its recent trends, communication media and technology, work, livelihood and career, entrepreneurship, development communication and journalism, information and communication technology, and corporate communication and public relations — plus subject-related pedagogy.
That final block of professional and communication topics is where PGT Home Science diverges most sharply from the TGT-level syllabus, so it’s worth treating as its own dedicated revision area rather than an afterthought to the traditional nutrition and textiles content.

Who Is Eligible for HTET PGT Home Science? Qualification Details
You need to satisfy all of the following:
- A Post Graduate degree in Home Science with at least 50% marks from a recognised university, along with a B.Ed. from a recognised university.
- Matric with Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject, or Senior Secondary/Graduation/Post Graduation with Hindi as one of the subjects.
- A consistent good academic record.
What counts as “Good Academic Record”
For direct recruitment, “Good Academic Record” means averaging at least 50% marks across any three of your 10th, 12th, Graduation and Post-Graduation results — but you must separately have at least 50% marks in your Post-Graduation itself.
Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates
Where the minimum qualifying mark is 50%, SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get a 5% relaxation, bringing it to 47.5%. Where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75%, per the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.
A qualification detail worth checking twice
Only a B.Ed. recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) counts. For the B.Ed. (Special Education) route specifically, the course needs recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is entrepreneurship actually part of the Home Science syllabus, or is that a mistake?
It’s explicitly included — the syllabus names entrepreneurship, development communication and journalism, and corporate communication and public relations as testable topics within the Textiles and Modern Home Science Professions part.
Does PGT Home Science cover food safety regulations, or just cooking and nutrition basics?
It goes well beyond basics — food standards and regulations in India, international food safety organisations and agreements, and food safety management systems are all explicitly named topics.
How is PGT Home Science eligibility different from TGT Home Science?
TGT Home Science accepts Home Science as an elective or Honours subject at graduation level. PGT Home Science requires a Post Graduate degree in Home Science specifically, with at least 50% marks, plus a B.Ed.
Does the Human Development portion overlap with the common Child Development and Pedagogy section?
There’s conceptual overlap, but the subject-specific Human Development content here covers Home-Science-specific milestones and family resource management, distinct from the pedagogical focus of the common section.
Given how much this syllabus has expanded beyond traditional nutrition and textiles content — into food safety regulation, ECCE, and professional communication — it’s worth checking your preparation material is current rather than relying on an older TGT-style Home Science outline.
