HTET TGT Art Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

HTET TGT Art Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

TGT Art is a small paper compared to some other TGT subjects, but it packs in art theory, Indian art history and applied technique into a single 60-mark section. However, the candidates with a good practical painting or sculpture background will sometimes not prepare well for the historical and theoretical part including the षडङ्ग (Shadanga) principles and the evolution of the Indian national flag, because the topics don’t feel like “art” in the studio sense.

Here is the guide that provides the HTET TGT Art syllabus as prescribed by the BSEH, exam weightage and the eligibility criteria for this paper in the same format.

Common Syllabus for HTET TGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)

These three sections are identical across every TGT subject and make up 90 of the 150 marks.

Child Development and Pedagogy

Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 11-16 age group — development and its relationship with learning, the influence of heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky. It also includes child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, individual learner differences, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.

Languages — Hindi and English

Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, acquisition and the use of multilingual classroom resources.

General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude

Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.

HTET TGT Art: Subject-Specific Syllabus

The 60-mark subject-specific section moves from foundational art theory through technique to Indian art history.

Foundations of Visual Art

An introduction to art and the fundamentals of visual art — its elements, and the principles of art and design. This includes the Shadanga (the six limbs of Indian art, a classical framework describing the core principles behind Indian painting and sculpture) and the importance of art in everyday life.

Technique and Process

Traditional and modern artistic techniques, and the process and procedure involved in painting, sculpture and applied art. This section also covers perspective (the technique of representing three-dimensional depth on a flat surface) and Indian folk art.

Indian Art History and the National Flag

The evolution of the Indian national flag, and the history and development of Indian art from pre-historic times through to the contemporary period — including applied art and graphic design — plus subject-related pedagogy.

Because this syllabus condenses theory, technique and history into one section without much elaboration in the official wording, candidates benefit from expanding each heading on their own — particularly the Shadanga principles and the pre-historic-to-contemporary art history timeline, both of which are compact phrases in the syllabus but cover a lot of testable ground.

Who Is Eligible for HTET TGT Art? Qualification Details

You need to satisfy both of the following:

  1. B.F.A./B.A. with minimum 50% marks in Art as an elective or Honours subject and Art as a teaching subject in any one of the following: BTC/JBT/D. Ed./D. El . Ed., or B. Ed. /B. Ed. (Special Education) recognised by NCTE norms OR 4 Year B. El . Ed with minimum 50% marks in Art or 4 years integrated B.F.A. / B. A./ B. Ed. with min. 50% marks in Art.
  2. Hindi or Sanskrit as subject in Matric, or Hindi as subject in higher education.

Note that both B.F.A. and B.A. routes are explicitly accepted, provided Art was your elective or Honours subject with at least 50% marks, paired with the relevant teaching qualification.

Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates

Where the minimum qualifying mark is 50%, SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get a 5% relaxation, bringing it to 47.5%. Where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75%, per the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.

A qualification detail worth checking twice

Only teacher-education diplomas or degrees recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) will be considered. B. and Diploma in Education (Special Education) Ed. (Special Education) routes need to be recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a B.F.A. graduate apply for TGT Art without a separate B.A.?

Yes. The eligibility condition explicitly accepts B.F.A. or B.A. with Art as your elective/Honours subject, as long as it’s paired with the relevant teaching qualification (BTC/JBT/D.Ed./D.El.Ed or B.Ed.).

Does the syllabus focus more on practical technique or art history/theory?

Both carry real weight. The 60-mark section spans foundational theory (including Shadanga), traditional and modern technique, and a dedicated Indian art history component running from pre-historic times to the present — none of these can be safely skipped.

What is Shadanga, and is it actually tested?

Shadanga refers to the six classical limbs or principles of Indian painting as laid out in traditional Indian art theory. It’s explicitly named in BSEH’s own syllabus under Foundations of Visual Art, so it’s a legitimate, testable topic rather than background context.

Is applied art and graphic design part of this syllabus?

Yes, explicitly included within the Indian Art History section, alongside the broader pre-historic-to-contemporary timeline.

The official wording is tight for a 60-mark section, so remember to use each syllabus line as a trigger to investigate further rather than a topic in itself. This is especially true for the Indian art history timeline which squeezes a very long time span into one syllabus sentence.
