HTET TGT Punjabi Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility
TGT Punjabi is organised differently from most other TGT language papers — instead of a grammar-and-literature split, BSEH structures the entire 60-mark subject-specific section around two class-wise textbook groups: Classes VI-VIII and Classes IX-X. Every question is tied to a specific prescribed book, which means the usual strategy of “revise Punjabi grammar broadly” misses most of what’s actually tested.
This guide contains the HTET TGT Punjabi syllabus as per the BSEH syllabus, weightage of the exam and eligibility criteria for this paper.

Common Syllabus for HTET TGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)
These three sections are identical across every TGT subject and make up 90 of the 150 marks.
Child Development and Pedagogy
Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 11-16 age group — development and its relationship with learning, the influence of heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky. It also includes child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, individual learner differences, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.
Languages — Hindi and English
Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, acquisition and the use of multilingual classroom resources.
General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude
Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.
HTET TGT Punjabi: Subject-Specific Syllabus
BSEH splits this 60-mark section into two parts, each tied to a specific set of textbooks.
ਭਾਗ ਪਹਿਲਾ (Part 1) — Classes VI, VII and VIII
Questions are drawn from the prescribed textbooks ਪਹਿਲਾ ਕਦਮ, ਦੂਜਾ ਪੜਾਅ, and ਉਡਾਣ (Classes 6th, 7th and 8th respectively). The syllabus covers the ਬਾਲਗੀਤ/ਕਵਿਤਾਵਾਂ (children’s songs and poems), ਬਾਲ-ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ/ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ (children’s stories and stories), ਇਕਾਂਗੀ/ਨਾਟਕ (one-act plays/drama), ਜੀਵਨੀਆਂ (biographies) and ਲੇਖ (essays) included in these three books.
Questions approach each text from multiple angles: ਵਿਸ਼ਾ-ਵਸਤੂ (subject matter), ਰੂਪ ਪੱਖ (form), ਉਦੇਸ਼ (purpose/objective), and ਬਾਲ ਮਨ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ (the effect on a child’s mind) — meaning candidates need to understand not just what each piece says, but why it was included in a middle-school curriculum.
ਭਾਗ ਦੂਜਾ (Part 2) — Classes IX and X
This part draws from four prescribed books, split by genre:
Poetry — ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਕਿਰਨਾਂ-1 and ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਕਿਰਨਾਂ-2. Questions cover ਵਿਸ਼ਾ-ਵਸਤੂ (subject matter), ਕੇਂਦਰੀ ਭਾਵ (central theme), ਕਾਵਿ ਕਲਪਨਾ (poetic imagination), ਕਾਵਿ ਗੁਣ (poetic quality) and ਕਾਵਿ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ (poetic style). The same two books also carry prose (ਵਾਰਤਕ) pieces, tested on ਵਿਸ਼ਾ-ਵਸਤੂ, ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼-ਵਿਚਾਰ (key ideas), ਵਿਗਿਆਨਿਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਣ (scientific perspective) and ਗੱਦ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ (prose style).
Stories and drama — ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਰੰਗ-1 and ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਰੰਗ-2. For the ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ (stories), questions cover subject matter, the ਸੰਵੇਦਨਾ (sensitivity/emotional core) within the story, its purpose, the lesson it imparts, its writing style, and its effect on the reader. For the ਇਕਾਂਗੀਆਂ (one-act plays), questions cover subject matter, ਪਾਤਰ ਚਿਤਰਣ (characterisation), purpose, dramatic style, stagecraft (ਰੰਗ ਮੰਚ), and the relevance of the play’s theme across different time periods.
Biographies — questions on the ਜੀਵਨੀਆਂ (biographies) in the prescribed books focus on the subject’s personal life, the hardships (ਔਕੜਾਂ) they faced, their struggle, their achievements, and the direction or inspiration (ਸੇਧ/ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ) they offered to society.

The most efficient way to prepare for each question in this paper is to go directly through ਪਹਿਲਾ ਕਦਮ, ਦੂਜਾ ਪੜਾਅ, ਉਡਾਣ, ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਕਿਰਨਾਂ (1 and 2) and ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਰੰਗ (1 and 2) as each question is tied to a specific named textbook, and a general revision of Punjabi literature will not cover material beyond this specific selection.
Who Is Eligible for HTET TGT Punjabi? Qualification Details
You need to satisfy both of the following:
- A Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks in Punjabi as an elective or Honours subject, combined with Punjabi as a teaching subject in one of: BTC/JBT/D.Ed./D.El.Ed, or B.Ed./B.Ed. (Special Education) recognised under NCTE norms, or a 4-year B.El.Ed with at least 50% marks in Punjabi, or a 4-year integrated BA-B.Ed with at least 50% marks in Punjabi.
- Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject in Matric, or Hindi as a subject at a higher education level.
There’s no separate subject-combination requirement — Punjabi as your elective or Honours subject at graduation level is sufficient, provided it’s paired with the relevant teaching qualification.
Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates
Where the minimum qualifying mark is 50%, SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get a 5% relaxation, bringing it to 47.5%. Where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75%, per the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.
A qualification detail worth checking twice
Only teacher-education diplomas or degrees recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) count. The Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B.Ed. (Special Education) routes need recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does TGT Punjabi test general grammar separately from the textbook-based questions?
The subject-specific section as defined by BSEH is totally based on prescribed textbooks for Classes VI-X, questions based on comprehension, theme, style and purpose on specific prescribed texts and not a separate grammar section like some other language papers.
Which classes does ਭਾਗ ਪਹਿਲਾ versus ਭਾਗ ਦੂਜਾ cover?
ਭਾਗ ਪਹਿਲਾ (Part 1) covers Classes VI-VIII through ਪਹਿਲਾ ਕਦਮ, ਦੂਜਾ ਪੜਾਅ and ਉਡਾਣ. ਭਾਗ ਦੂਜਾ (Part 2) covers Classes IX-X through ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਕਿਰਨਾਂ and ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਰੰਗ.
Are biographies and one-act plays tested as seriously as poetry and stories?
Yes. BSEH syllabus has got its own question types for biographies (ਜੀਵਨੀਆਂ) and one act plays (ਇਕਾਂਗੀ) rather than clubbing them with general prose and these are not minor topics.
Is Hindi required for TGT Punjabi eligibility even with a Punjabi-medium degree?
Yes. “You have your Punjabi subject qualification but you also need Hindi or Sanskrit in Matric or Hindi at a higher education level. That is an additional requirement.
Because this paper is based entirely on six named textbooks, not a general syllabus outline, it is more reliable preparation to work chapter by chapter through each one – following the subject matter, style and purpose as BSEH’s own question angles suggest – than to broadly revise Punjabi literature.
