HTET TGT Sanskrit Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility
TGT Sanskrit is one of the more rule-heavy papers in the HTET setup – the 60 mark subject-specific section is split into three formal भागः (parts) and a large chunk of it is sutra-based: संधि, समास and प्रत्यय questions are expected to draw on the actual grammatical sutras from the मध्यसिद्धान्तकौमुदी and सिद्धान्तकौमुदी, not just the general rule in isolation. The paper will be much tougher for the candidates preparing Sanskrit grammar in the same way as they prepare Hindi grammar.
This guide contains the HTET TGT Sanskrit syllabus as prescribed by BSEH, the exam weightage, and the eligibility conditions for this paper.

Common Syllabus for HTET TGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)
These three sections are identical across every TGT subject and make up 90 of the 150 marks.
Child Development and Pedagogy
Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 11-16 age group — development and its relationship with learning, the influence of heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky. It also includes child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, individual learner differences, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.
Languages — Hindi and English
Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, acquisition and the use of multilingual classroom resources.
General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude
Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.
HTET TGT Sanskrit: Subject-Specific Syllabus
BSEH organises this paper into three formal parts (भागः), and specifies the exact textbooks questions are drawn from: रुचिरा भाग 1, 2 and 3, and शेमुषी भाग 1 and 2. Passage-based MCQs (both पठित and अपठित गद्यांश) are set directly from these five books.
प्रथमो भागः (Part One) — Grammar Foundations
Questions based on संज्ञा प्रकरण (the grammar of technical terms): इत्संज्ञा, प्रत्याहारसंज्ञा, उदात्त, अनुदात्त, स्वरित, संयोगसंज्ञा, सवर्णसंज्ञा, उच्चारणस्थानानि and प्रयत्नानि.
संधि questions reference specific sutras — इको यणचि, अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः, आद्गुणः, वृद्धिरेचि, लोपः शाकल्यस्य, स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः, झलां जशोऽन्ते, विसर्जनीयस्य सः, ससजुषो रुः — along with sandhi-viccheda (splitting compounds back into their original sounds) based on these rules.
समासाः are tested per मध्यसिद्धान्तकौमुदी — केवलसमासः, अव्ययीभावसमासः, तत्पुरुषः, कर्मधारयः, द्विगुः, द्वन्द्वः and बहुव्रीहिः, including both compound formation (समास) and its reverse breakdown (समासविग्रह).
प्रत्यय questions cover पूर्वकृदन्त, उत्तरकृदन्त, तद्धित and स्त्रीलिङ्ग प्रत्यय, again referenced to मध्यसिद्धान्तकौमुदी sutras — a long list that includes क्त, क्तवतु, शतृ, शानच्, तव्यत्, अनीयर्, क्यप्, ण्यत्, क्त्वा, ल्यप्, तुमुन्, घञ्, मतुप्, टाप् and dozens of others.
द्वितीयो भागः (Part Two) — Indeclinables, Prefixes and Karaka
अव्ययपद questions cover common indeclinables with their sutra basis — अत्र, अध, इतः, इत्थम्, इदानीम्, शनैः, उच्चैः, नीचैः, कथम्, यद्यपि, यथा, तथा, खलु, प्रातः, किमर्थम्, यतः and कुतः.
This part also covers प्रादि उपसर्ग in relation to verb formation (उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे), विशेष्य-विशेषण identification, विलोम and पर्याय पद (antonyms and synonyms), and कारकप्रकरण (the case/karaka system) based on सिद्धान्तकौमुदी, tested through both conceptual questions and sentence usage.
तृतीयो भागः (Part Three) — Chhandas, Alankara and Literary History
This part also covers the lives and works of major Sanskrit literary figures, grouped by category:
It closes with the षड्वेदाङ्गानि (the six Vedangas — शिक्षा, कल्पः, व्याकरणम्, ज्योतिषः, छन्दः, निरुक्तम्) and a general introduction to the उपनिषद् and वेद.

Given how much of this paper is sutra-referenced, it’s worth preparing संधि, समास and प्रत्यय directly from मध्यसिद्धान्तकौमुदी rather than from a simplified grammar guide — questions are written expecting that level of precision.
Who Is Eligible for HTET TGT Sanskrit? Qualification Details
You need to satisfy both of the following:
- One of: a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks in Sanskrit as an elective or Honours subject, combined with Sanskrit as a teaching subject in BTC/JBT/D.Ed./D.El.Ed, or in B.Ed./B.Ed. (Special Education) recognised under NCTE norms; or a 4-year B.El.Ed with at least 50% marks in Sanskrit; or a 4-year integrated BA-B.Ed with at least 50% marks in Sanskrit; or Shastri with at least 50% marks from a recognised university along with Shiksha Shastri or a Language Teacher Course (L.T.C.) / Oriental Training (O.T.) in Sanskrit conducted by the Haryana Government, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Haryana Education Department.
- Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject in Matric, or Hindi as a subject at a higher education level.
The Shastri + Shiksha Shastri route is specific to Sanskrit and is not present in most other TGT subject eligibility structures — it is present along with the normal B. The Ed-based routes, not as an alternative to them, so candidates with a traditional B.A. Sanskrit Honours plus B. Ed. are equally qualified.
Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates
SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get 5% relaxation in minimum qualifying mark of 50% to 47.5%. In such cases where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75% based on the Supreme Court’s 2011 decision in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.
A qualification detail worth checking twice
Only those teacher-education diplomas or degrees recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) will be considered, except the Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B. Ed. (Special Education) routes to be recognised by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi. For the Shastri route in particular, the Shiksha Shastri/L.T.C./O.T. qualification should be conducted by the Haryana Government or accepted as equivalent by the Haryana Education Department officially.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which textbooks does BSEH set TGT Sanskrit passage questions from?
This set of five books comprises of रुचिरा भाग 1, 2 and 3 and शेमुषी भाग 1 and 2 (both पठित and अपठित passage questions).
Do संधि and समास questions expect the actual sutra, or just the general rule?
BSEH own syllabus wording lists the sutras by name (इको यणचि, आद्गुणः, वृद्धिरेचि, etc.) so preparation should be done from मध्यसिद्धान्तकौमुदी not from a simplified summary.
Is a Shastri degree alone sufficient for TGT Sanskrit eligibility?
No. To be eligible, you must have Shastri degree with minimum 50% marks and either Shiksha Shastri, Language Teacher Course or Oriental Training in Sanskrit – conducted by the Haryana Government or recognised as equivalent by the Haryana Education Department.
Does the literary history portion cover modern Sanskrit writers, or only classical poets?
Both. Alongside classical महाकवयः like Kalidasa and Valmiki, the syllabus explicitly names modern Sanskrit poets (आधुनिकसंस्कृतकवयः) as a separate category.
The syllabus is stuffed with named sutras, metres, figures of speech and authors, so a simple reference sheet for each category (by part, not all mixed together) makes revision a lot easier in the run-up to the exam.
