HTET PGT Chemistry Syllabus 2026: Exam Pattern, Eligibility and Marks Distribution

HTET PGT Chemistry Syllabus 2026 – Exam Pattern, Eligibility and Education & Qualification

Search “HTET PGT Chemistry syllabus” and most pages hand you a topic list lifted from an old PDF, then stop. What usually gets skipped is the part that actually decides how you should prepare: how the 150 marks are split, which postgraduate degrees are accepted for the Chemistry paper, and where candidates lose marks without realising it.

This page covers that part: the exam structure, the eligibility question candidates actually get stuck on, and the mistakes that show up year after year in Level 3 (PGT) results.

Complete HTET PGT Chemistry Syllabus 2026

Part I: Common Subjects (90 Marks)

Every HTET Level-3 candidate answers the same 90 marks of common papers, whatever their teaching subject. The cut-off is usually decided here rather than in the subject paper.

1. Child Development and Pedagogy (30 Marks)

This section tests your understanding of educational psychology as it applies to teaching senior secondary students.

HTET Old Sample Papers (HTET Question Papers)

  • Child Development: Concept of development and its relationship with learning; principles of the development of children; influence of heredity and environment; socialization processes involving teachers, parents and peers.
  • Key Theories: Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky – constructs and critical perspectives; Freud’s psychosexual development theory; Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development; Bandura’s social learning theory.
  • Concepts and Intelligence: Child-centred and progressive education; critical perspective on the construct of intelligence; multi-dimensional intelligence; language and thought; gender as a social construct, gender roles and educational practice.
  • Individual Differences: Understanding differences based on diversity of language, caste, gender, community and religion.
  • Assessment: Distinction between assessment for learning and assessment of learning; school-based assessment; Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation; formulating appropriate questions to assess readiness levels, enhance learning and critical thinking, and measure learner achievement.
  • Inclusive Education: Understanding children with special needs; addressing learners from diverse, disadvantaged and deprived backgrounds; addressing children with learning difficulties and impairments; addressing talented, creative and specially abled learners.
  • Learning and Pedagogy: How children think and learn, and why they sometimes fail to succeed in school; basic processes of teaching and learning; children’s strategies of learning; learning as a social activity; the child as a problem solver and scientific investigator; understanding children’s errors as significant steps in learning; cognition and emotions; motivation and learning; personal and environmental factors contributing to learning.

2. Languages (30 Marks)

The language paper is split evenly between Hindi and English, 15 marks each.

  • Hindi (15 Marks): Reading an unseen passage from prose, drama or poetry with questions on comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability. Pedagogy of language development covering learning and acquisition, principles of language teaching, the role of listening and speaking, a critical perspective on the role of grammar, challenges of teaching language in a diverse classroom, language difficulties, errors and disorders, and teaching-learning materials.
  • English (15 Marks): One unseen prose passage (discursive, literary, narrative or scientific) with questions on comprehension, grammar and verbal ability. Pedagogy of language development covering the same set of principles, plus textbooks, multi-media materials and multilingual resources of the classroom.

3. General Studies (30 Marks)

A composite section of three equal parts, testing aptitude, reasoning and state awareness.

  • Quantitative Aptitude (10 Marks): Whole numbers, fractions and decimals, percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, time and work, averages, basic algebra, geometry of triangles and circles, basic trigonometry, and interpretation of data graphs such as pie charts and histograms.
  • Reasoning Ability (10 Marks): Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, analogies, space visualization, coding and decoding, syllogisms, Venn diagrams, pattern folding and unfolding, embedded figures, and social and emotional intelligence.
  • Haryana General Knowledge and Awareness (10 Marks): State history, geography, civics, environment, regional culture, arts and traditions, current affairs, and active state welfare schemes.

Part II: Core Subject – Chemistry (60 Marks)

Questions are based on topics from the Class 9 to 12 syllabus prescribed by the Education Department of Haryana. The difficulty level, however, extends up to the post-graduate standard, so expect familiar topics to be tested at a much deeper conceptual level.

Subject-Related Pedagogy

The core paper also carries questions on the teaching of Chemistry itself: teaching strategies and methods, instructional tools and teaching aids, curriculum transaction, practical and activity based approaches, and assessment techniques appropriate to the senior secondary level.

What Is HTET PGT Chemistry?

HTET, the Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test, is conducted by the Board of School Education, Haryana (BSEH). It has three levels. Level 1 is for PRT (Classes I–V), Level 2 is for TGT (Classes VI–VIII), and Level 3 is for PGT, which qualifies you to teach Classes IX–XII in Haryana government schools.

PGT Chemistry is one of the elective subject papers under Level 3. Choosing it means the subject-specific section of your paper will test Chemistry at a postgraduate level. The rest of the paper, pedagogy, languages, reasoning, and general awareness, stays the same across every PGT subject.

HTET PGT Chemistry Eligibility

The baseline requirement for Level 3 is a postgraduate degree in the subject you’re applying for, along with a B.Ed. from a recognised university. For the Chemistry paper, that means an M.Sc. in Chemistry.

Where candidates get stuck is the grey area around allied degrees: M.Sc. in Biochemistry, Applied Chemistry, or Industrial Chemistry, for instance. Whether these count depends on the equivalence list published with that year’s official notification, not on general NCTE guidelines you might find quoted elsewhere. If your degree isn’t a plain M.Sc. Chemistry, check the current BSEH notification’s equivalence clause before you plan your entire preparation around this paper.

B.Ed. is not optional for Level 3. There’s no substitute qualification that lets you skip it, unlike some primary-level exams that occasionally accept alternate teacher-training certificates.

HTET PGT Chemistry Exam Pattern 2026

Every PGT paper, regardless of subject, follows the same structure: 150 objective-type questions for 150 marks, to be completed in 2 hours 30 minutes. There’s no negative marking, and that changes how you should approach questions you’re unsure about. Guessing costs you nothing, so leaving a question blank is pure lost opportunity.

English1515
Hindi1515
Reasoning Ability1010
Quantitative Aptitude1010
Haryana GK1010
Chemistry (Subject-Specific)6060

Look at that table again. Chemistry, the subject you spent years studying, accounts for 60 out of 150 marks. Ninety marks come from sections that have nothing to do with your postgraduate specialization.

Where the Chemistry-Specific Syllabus Goes

The 60-mark subject-specific section is what most PGT Chemistry candidates search for, and it deserves its own detailed breakdown rather than a rushed paragraph here. That section will be added to this page separately.

How Candidates Lose Marks on This Paper

The most common mistake isn’t weak Chemistry. It’s treating the other 90 marks as an afterthought. Candidates who’ve studied Chemistry for years sometimes walk in and lose 15-20 marks on Child Development and Pedagogy simply because they never opened a pedagogy book, assuming it would be “common sense.” It usually isn’t; the questions test specific theories and terminology.

The second mistake is language sections. English and Hindi together carry 30 marks, the same weight as half your Chemistry section. Skipping practice here because “I already know the language” is a different problem than knowing the language: these are objective questions built around grammar rules and comprehension patterns, not conversational fluency.

The third: since there’s no negative marking, some candidates still hesitate on questions they’re not fully sure about. With this marking scheme, an educated guess between two options is always worth taking.

Frequently Asked Questions

u003cstrongu003eIs B.Ed. compulsory for HTET PGT Chemistry?u003c/strongu003e

Yes, B.Ed. is compulsory for Level 3. An M.Sc. in Chemistry alone does not meet the eligibility requirement; you need both the postgraduate degree and the B.Ed. from a recognised university.

u003cstrongu003eCan M.Sc. Biochemistry or Industrial Chemistry applicants apply?u003c/strongu003e

It depends on the current year’s official BSEH notification equivalence list, which varies by year, so verify against the notification currently in effect rather than a previous one.

u003cstrongu003eIs there negative marking in HTET PGT Chemistry?u003c/strongu003e

No. All 150 questions carry equal marks with no deduction for wrong answers.

u003cstrongu003eHow much of the paper is actually Chemistry?u003c/strongu003e

60 out of 150 marks, about 40% of the paper. The remaining 90 marks come from Child Development and Pedagogy, Languages, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and Haryana GK.

u003cstrongu003eDoes passing HTET PGT Chemistry guarantee a job?u003c/strongu003e

No. HTET is an eligibility test, not a recruitment exam. Qualifying makes you eligible to apply for PGT Chemistry recruitment when Haryana School Education advertises vacancies, but it doesn’t guarantee a post.

u003cstrongu003eCan TGT-qualified candidates apply for PGT Chemistry?u003c/strongu003e

Yes. PRT, TGT and PGT are separate levels with separate eligibility requirements, so a TGT qualification on its own doesn’t carry over; you still need the PGT-specific postgraduate degree and B.Ed.

u003cstrongu003eWhen is the HTET PGT Chemistry exam?u003c/strongu003e

BSEH has scheduled the HTET 2026 written exam for 21 and 22 November 2026, with Level 3 (PGT) candidates, including Chemistry, sitting on 21 November. Your admit card, released roughly four days before, will confirm your exact shift.

u003cstrongu003eWhere can I download the HTET PGT Chemistry syllabus PDF?u003c/strongu003e

Use the official link in the syllabus section above, or check bseh.org.in directly for the latest PDF, since BSEH occasionally revises subject-wise syllabi between notifications.

u003cstrongu003eHow should I prioritise my preparation across the paper?u003c/strongu003e

Start with Child Development and Pedagogy and the language sections, the 60 marks candidates most often under-prepare, then work through the Chemistry core in class order: Class 9-10 foundation, Class 11 physical and organic chemistry, then Class 12 advanced topics.
