What HTET PGT Political Science Is For

HTET, conducted by the Board of School Education, Haryana (BSEH), has three levels: PRT, TGT, and PGT. Political Science is an elective subject paper under Level 3 (PGT), which covers Classes IX to XII.

Qualifying this exam doesn’t place you in a school. It makes you eligible to apply for PGT Political Science posts the next time Haryana’s School Education Department releases a recruitment notification. Treat HTET and recruitment as two separate steps, not one.

Eligibility for the Political Science Paper

The base requirement for Level 3 is a postgraduate degree in the subject along with a B.Ed. from a recognised university. Here, that means an M.A. in Political Science.

Candidates with an M.A. in Public Administration sometimes ask whether it counts as equivalent. That depends entirely on the equivalence list in the specific year’s official notification, and it isn’t something that stays fixed year to year. Don’t rely on a forum answer or a previous year’s cutoff to settle this; check the current BSEH notification directly.

As with every PGT subject, B.Ed. isn’t optional and there’s no alternate certification that substitutes for it at Level 3.

HTET PGT Political Science Exam Pattern 2026

Every PGT paper shares the same format: 150 objective questions, 150 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes, no negative marking.

Political Science accounts for 60 of the 150 marks. The other 90 come from sections that have nothing to do with political theory, comparative government, or public administration, including the one section candidates most often misjudge.

Why the Haryana GK Section Trips Up Political Science Candidates

This is worth calling out specifically because it catches people off guard. Haryana GK, worth 10 marks, sounds like it should overlap with a Political Science background: state government structure, panchayati raj, administrative divisions. In practice, most of the section is state-specific factual recall: districts, rivers, historical events, government schemes, notable personalities. That’s general knowledge about Haryana, not political theory.

A candidate who assumes their subject knowledge covers this section usually leaves 4-5 of those 10 marks on the table. It’s a small section, but it’s an avoidable loss. A few hours with a Haryana GK-focused resource closes that gap completely.

Where Candidates Lose Marks on This Paper

Beyond the Haryana GK gap, the two recurring issues are the same ones every PGT paper produces: treating Child Development and Pedagogy (30 marks, half the weight of the entire subject-specific section) as filler, and under-preparing English and Hindi because “the language isn’t the problem” when the actual questions test grammar rules and comprehension technique rather than fluency.

Since there’s no negative marking, every one of these 90 non-subject marks is genuinely recoverable with focused preparation. They’re not a fixed cost you have to accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is B.Ed. compulsory for HTET PGT Political Science?

Yes. An M.A. in Political Science alone doesn’t meet Level 3 eligibility; you need the B.Ed. as well, from a recognised university.

Does an M.A. in Public Administration qualify for the Political Science paper?

Only if it’s listed as an equivalent degree in the current year’s official notification. This isn’t guaranteed to be consistent every year, so verify against the notification currently in effect.

Is there negative marking in HTET PGT Political Science?
