HTET PGT Political Science Syllabus 2026 – Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Old Sample Papers
A fair number of HTET PGT Political Science candidates assume the Haryana GK section will play to their strengths, since state polity and governance overlaps with what they studied. It usually doesn’t work out that way, and that mismatch is a good example of why the exam pattern deserves more attention than most syllabus pages give it.
This page covers the eligibility question, the exam structure, the Haryana GK mismatch, and the complete subject-specific topic list below, section by section, exactly as BSEH has structured it for HTET 2026.

What HTET PGT Political Science Is For
HTET, conducted by the Board of School Education, Haryana (BSEH), has three levels: PRT, TGT, and PGT. Political Science is an elective subject paper under Level 3 (PGT), which covers Classes IX to XII.
Qualifying this exam doesn’t place you in a school. It makes you eligible to apply for PGT Political Science posts the next time Haryana’s School Education Department releases a recruitment notification. Treat HTET and recruitment as two separate steps, not one.
Eligibility for the Political Science Paper
The base requirement for Level 3 is a postgraduate degree in the subject along with a B.Ed. from a recognised university. Here, that means an M.A. in Political Science.
Candidates with an M.A. in Public Administration sometimes ask whether it counts as equivalent. That depends entirely on the equivalence list in the specific year’s official notification, and it isn’t something that stays fixed year to year. Don’t rely on a forum answer or a previous year’s cutoff to settle this; check the current BSEH notification directly.
As with every PGT subject, B.Ed. isn’t optional and there’s no alternate certification that substitutes for it at Level 3.
HTET PGT Political Science Exam Pattern 2026
Every PGT paper shares the same format: 150 objective questions, 150 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes, no negative marking.
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Child Development and Pedagogy | 30 | 30 |
| English | 15 | 15 |
| Hindi | 15 | 15 |
| Reasoning Ability | 10 | 10 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 10 | 10 |
| Haryana GK | 10 | 10 |
| Political Science (Subject-Specific) | 60 | 60 |
| Total | 150 | 150 |
Political Science accounts for 60 of the 150 marks. The other 90 come from sections that have nothing to do with political theory, comparative government, or public administration, including the one section candidates most often misjudge.
Why the Haryana GK Section Trips Up Political Science Candidates
This is worth calling out specifically because it catches people off guard. Haryana GK, worth 10 marks, sounds like it should overlap with a Political Science background: state government structure, panchayati raj, administrative divisions. In practice, most of the section is state-specific factual recall: districts, rivers, historical events, government schemes, notable personalities. That’s general knowledge about Haryana, not political theory.
A candidate who assumes their subject knowledge covers this section usually leaves 4-5 of those 10 marks on the table. It’s a small section, but it’s an avoidable loss. A few hours with a Haryana GK-focused resource closes that gap completely.
The Subject-Specific Section
The full topic list is in Part 2 above: Political Theory and Forms of Government, the Indian Constitution, and International Relations and Politics, worth 60 of the paper’s 150 marks.
Where Candidates Lose Marks on This Paper
Beyond the Haryana GK gap, the two recurring issues are the same ones every PGT paper produces: treating Child Development and Pedagogy (30 marks, half the weight of the entire subject-specific section) as filler, and under-preparing English and Hindi because “the language isn’t the problem” when the actual questions test grammar rules and comprehension technique rather than fluency.
Since there’s no negative marking, every one of these 90 non-subject marks is genuinely recoverable with focused preparation. They’re not a fixed cost you have to accept.

Frequently Asked Questions
u003cstrongu003eIs B.Ed. compulsory for HTET PGT Political Science?u003c/strongu003e
Yes. An M.A. in Political Science alone doesn’t meet Level 3 eligibility; you need the B.Ed. as well, from a recognised university.
u003cstrongu003eDoes an M.A. in Public Administration qualify for the Political Science paper?u003c/strongu003e

u003cstrongu003eIs there negative marking in HTET PGT Political Science?u003c/strongu003e
No. All 150 questions are equally weighted with no penalty for wrong answers.
u003cstrongu003eDoes my Political Science background help with the Haryana GK section?u003c/strongu003e
Only partially. Haryana GK is mostly state-specific factual knowledge (geography, history, schemes, personalities) rather than political theory, so it needs separate, dedicated preparation.
u003cstrongu003eHow many marks in the paper are actually Political Science?u003c/strongu003e
60 out of 150. The remaining 90 come from Child Development and Pedagogy, English, Hindi, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and Haryana GK.

BSEH has scheduled the HTET 2026 written exam for 21 and 22 November 2026, with Level 3 (PGT) candidates, including Political Science, sitting on 21 November. Confirm your exact shift on your admit card, released roughly four days before the exam.
u003cstrongu003eDoes qualifying HTET PGT Political Science guarantee a job?u003c/strongu003e
No. It’s an eligibility test, not recruitment. You still need to apply separately when PGT Political Science vacancies are advertised.
u003cstrongu003eWhere can I download the HTET PGT Political Science syllabus PDF?u003c/strongu003e
Use the verified link in the syllabus section above, or check the official BSEH website (bseh.org.in) for the latest PDF, since HBSE occasionally revises subject-wise syllabi between notifications.
u003cstrongu003eDoes the Political Science syllabus overlap with Haryana PGT recruitment exams?u003c/strongu003e
It overlaps heavily since both draw from the same postgraduate-level Political Science curriculum, but HTET (BSEH) is an eligibility test while HSSC PGT recruitment is a separate, later process with its own notification and syllabus PDF.
u003cstrongu003eHow should I prioritise my preparation across the paper?u003c/strongu003e
Start with Child Development and Pedagogy and Haryana GK, the most commonly under-prepared 40 marks, then work through the Political Science core in the order it’s listed on this page: Political Theory, Indian Constitution, International Relations.
