HTET PGT Geography Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility
The PGT Geography is divided into three different streams under one single 60-mark section – Geography of India, Physical and Human Geography – each of them vast enough to be a subject in itself at the graduation level. Candidates who have specialised heavily in one stream for their M.A. (typically Physical Geography) may find the India-specific and Human Geography sections need a separate, dedicated revision pass.
This guide covers the HTET PGT Geography syllabus exactly as BSEH has structured it, along with the exam weightage and the eligibility conditions for this paper.

Common Syllabus for HTET PGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)
These three sections are identical across every PGT subject and make up 90 of the 150 marks.
Child Development and Pedagogy
Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 14-17 age group. Alongside the standard ground — development and its relationship with learning, heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky — this PGT-level syllabus specifically adds Freud’s Psychosexual Development Theory, Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development, and Bandura’s Social Learning Theory. It also covers inclusive education, the construct of intelligence, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.
Languages — Hindi and English
Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, relevant to the 14-17 age group.
General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude
Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.
HTET PGT Geography: Subject-Specific Syllabus
The 60-mark section is organised into three streams.
Geography of India
Covers India’s size, location and neighbouring countries; physical structure and physiographic divisions; drainage, climate and monsoon; natural vegetation and wildlife; natural hazards and disasters specific to India. Water resources, land resources and agriculture, minerals and energy resources, and manufacturing industries.
Population topics include distribution, density, growth and composition, alongside human settlements — their types, patterns and distribution. The stream closes with transport and communication, international trade, planning and sustainable development in the Indian context, and a geographical perspective on selected contemporary issues and problems — plus subject-related pedagogy.
Physical Geography
Geography as a discipline — its development and scope. The solar system and the motions of the Earth, the origin and evolution of the Earth, and the origin and distribution of oceans and continents. The Earth’s interior — its structure and composition — along with geomorphic processes and the evolution of landforms.
The composition and structure of the atmosphere, solar radiation, heat balance and temperature, atmospheric circulation and weather systems, and water in the atmosphere. World climate and climate change, oceanic water and its movement, and biodiversity and conservation — plus subject-related pedagogy.
Human Geography
The meaning, principles, nature and scope of human geography, and human development. Economic activities across the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary sectors. World population — its distribution, density, growth and composition. Transport and communication, and international trade — plus subject-related pedagogy.

India-specific content, physical processes and human/economic geography are tested as three separate bodies of knowledge. It is worthwhile building three separate revision tracks rather than one combined “Geography” pass – especially if your postgraduate specialisation in geography was skewed towards one stream over the others.
Who Is Eligible to Apply for HTET PGT Geography? Details of Qualifications
You need to satisfy all of the following:
- B. Ed. from an accredited university, or a master’s degree in geography with at least 50% of the possible points.
- matriculation with Sanskrit or Hindi as a subject. Hindi is one of the subjects offered in Senior Secondary, Graduation, and Post Graduation.
- consistently excellent academic standing.
“Good Academic Record”: What is it?
In order to be considered for direct recruitment, you must have an average of at least 50% in any three of your 10th, 12th, graduation, and post-graduation results. Additionally, you must have at least 50% in your post-graduation.
SC, BC, and candidates with physical disabilities can unwind
The minimum qualifying score of 50% to 47.5% is relaxed by 5% for candidates from SC, BC, and those with disabilities. According to the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan v. Union of India, the relaxed figure in situations where the minimum is 45% is 42.75%.
A qualifying detail that merits further examination
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)-recognized B. Ed. degree is the only one that counts. B. Instead, the course should be approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) for the Ed. (Special Education) route.
FAQs
Does PGT Geography prioritise physical geography over human geography or geography of India?
Prepare all three streams equally rather than assuming one would carry more weight because BSEH does not release an internal marks division across all three streams.
Does general climatology include climate change, or is it a separate field?
Together with the more conventional information on atmospheric circulation and weather patterns, it is explicitly mentioned as a distinct line item under Physical Geography under “World Climate and Climate Change.”
There is some overlap between the Haryana GK section in General Studies and Human Geography.
Human Geography is tested at a postgraduate conceptual level—principles, theory, and global patterns—instead of the state-specific factual recall tested in Haryana GK, although there is some conceptual proximity (both touch population and economic activity).
What distinguishes PGT from TGT Geography in terms of eligibility requirements?
There isn’t a distinct TGT paper for geography at HTET. In contrast to TGT Social Studies, which consists of four subjects, including geography, geography is a PGT-only subject.
Spread your study time among the three streams at first rather than letting one take precedence just because it falls within your postgraduate specialisation. The geography of India, physical geography, and human geography are all sufficiently large to serve as the foundation of a separate revision scheme.
