HTET TGT Home Science Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

HTET TGT Home Science Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

TGT Home Science is broader than its name suggests. The subject-specific section, which is for 60 marks, ranges from nutrition science, household management and budgeting, and human growth and development to textile science, which seem like four connected mini-subjects than a single unifying topic. Candidates who prepare only the food-and-nutrition section (the most closely related part with a normal graduation syllabus) often under-revise the human development and textile sections.

This guide is on the HTET TGT Home Science syllabus as BSEH has framed it, with the exam weightage and the eligibility conditions for this paper.

Common Syllabus for HTET TGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)

These three sections are identical across every TGT subject and make up 90 of the 150 marks.

Child Development and Pedagogy

Covers the psychology of teaching and learning for the 11-16 age group — development and its relationship with learning, the influence of heredity and environment, socialisation, and the perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky. It also includes child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, individual learner differences, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors in the learning process.

Note that this common section and the Human Growth and Development portion of the subject-specific paper below cover overlapping ground from different angles — one is pedagogical, the other is domain-specific to Home Science — so don’t assume preparing one covers the other.

Languages — Hindi and English

Each carries 15 marks: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development, acquisition and the use of multilingual classroom resources.

General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude

Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) spans verbal and non-verbal types. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, mensuration and data representation.

HTET TGT Home Science: Subject-Specific Syllabus

The 60-mark section is organised into three broad areas.

Food, Nutrition and Health

The concept of food, nutrition and health; types and functions of food; the importance and methods of cooking; the nutrients found in food; the concept of nutrition, including over-nutrition and under-nutrition. Food safety, food storage and preservation, and food and personal hygiene.

Meal planning — its concept, importance, principles and the factors affecting it — along with balanced diets, therapeutic diets, and the weights and measures commonly used in the kitchen. Infections and lifestyle diseases round out this section.

Home, Family and Resource Management

The concept and importance of home, family and values; types of rooms in a house; lighting and ventilation; kitchen design and layout; wall decoration, dining table arrangement, flower arrangement, and furniture selection; and the use of colour in different areas of a house. Household routine, the patient’s room in a house, floor decoration, and waste disposal.

The expenses of an average Indian household; the concept, types and advantages of budgeting; resource management in daily life — time, energy and money; work simplification techniques; consumer education; and safety and emergency management in the home, including pesticide safety and basic first aid.

Human Growth and Development, and Textiles

Human growth and development — the concept, the similarities and differences between growth and development, the factors and principles underlying them, and the special features and milestones of infancy, childhood and adolescence.

The concept of Home Science itself — its evolution, sub-disciplines, relevance, and career scope. This section then moves into apparel and textiles: selecting clothes, fibre and fabric types, the characteristics and classification of fibres, and the care and maintenance of cotton, wool, silk and synthetic fabrics. It closes with the equipment, cleaning and finishing agents used in routine garment care, the art of knitting, basic stitching and embroidery techniques, and the concepts of warp and weft — plus subject-related pedagogy.

This paper is a good example of the combination of nutrition science, household economics, developmental psychology and textile science. It’s worth preparing each of these as its own block, rather than assuming strength in one area (most commonly nutrition) will get you through the others.

Who Is Eligible for HTET TGT Home Science? Qualification Details

You need to satisfy both of the following:

  1. B. Home Science (50% marks) as an elective or Honours subject with Home Science as teaching subject in one of the following: BTC/JBT/D. Ed./D. El . Ed., or B. Ed. /B. Ed. (Special Education) recognised by NCTE norms OR 4 Year B. El . Home Science with 50% or above marks or 4 year integrated BA-B Ed with minimum 50% marks in Home Science.
  2. Hindi or Sanskrit as subject in Matric, or Hindi as subject in higher education.

There is no separate subject-combination requirement – Home Science as your elective or Honours subject at graduation level will suffice provided you have the relevant teaching qualification.

Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates

SC, BC and differently-abled candidates get 5% relaxation in minimum qualifying mark of 50% to 47.5%. In such cases where the minimum is 45%, the relaxed figure is 42.75% based on the Supreme Court’s 2011 decision in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.

A qualification detail worth checking twice

Only teacher-education diplomas or degrees recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) will be considered. B. and Diploma in Education (Special Education) Ed. (Special Education) routes need to be recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does TGT Home Science cover only food and nutrition, or does it go beyond that?

It goes beyond nutrition – the 60-mark section also includes household resource management, human growth and development and textile science, all as separate, independently testable areas.

Is the Human Growth and Development portion the same as the common Child Development and Pedagogy section?

No. They are conceptually overlapping but are tested separately — Child Development and Pedagogy is pedagogical and common to every TGT paper, whereas the Human Growth and Development portion here is Home-Science-specific content within the subject paper.

Is there a separate subject-combination requirement for TGT Home Science?

No. You have Home Science as your elective/Honours subject and also the required teaching qualification. As opposed to TGT Science or Social Studies, the eligibility requirement is only Home Science.

How much weight does the Textiles portion carry compared to Food and Nutrition?

BSEH does not break down the internal marks within the 60-mark subject-specific section, so Food and Nutrition, Resource Management, and Human Growth and Development/Textiles should all be treated as carrying equal weight rather than assuming nutrition is the dominant one.

Given the number of different domains this paper touches, candidates often get the best return from treating Food & Nutrition, Resource Management and Human Development & Textiles as three separate revision tracks rather than one combined ‘Home Science’ pass.
