HTET TGT Mathematics Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

HTET TGT Mathematics Syllabus 2026 Subject-wise Syllabus, Exam Pattern and Eligibility

TGT Mathematics is the easiest paper to prepare as it is a single subject and not a combined subject like Science or Social Studies. The catch is that the 60-mark subject-specific section is heavy on Class 9-10 geometry and mensuration — chapters that are usually less focused upon in a typical graduation-level Mathematics course than algebra and calculus.

In this guide we are covering the HTET TGT Mathematics syllabus as defined by BSEH along with the exam weightage and specific eligibility rules for this paper.

HTET TGT Mathematics Exam Pattern and Weightage 2026

The paper carries 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks, completed in two and a half hours. Every question is worth one mark, with no negative marking.

Child Development and Pedagogy3030
Languages (Hindi 15 + English 15)3030
General Studies (Quantitative Aptitude 10, Reasoning 10, Haryana GK 10)3030

Qualifying marks:

  • General category candidates: 60% (90 marks)
  • SC and differently-abled candidates of Haryana domicile: 55% (82 marks)
  • SC and differently-abled candidates from other states: 60% (90 marks)

The topics are from the Class 6-10 syllabus of the Haryana Education Department but the BSEH has upped the ante to the senior secondary level. So, the questions on geometry and mensuration, especially, can be much tougher than the textbook problems on which they are based.

Common Syllabus for HTET TGT (Child Development, Languages, General Studies)

In all TGT papers, the three sections are the same and carry 90 out of 150 marks.

Child Development and Pedagogy

Centres on the psychology of teaching and learning for the 11-16 age group — concept of development, the influence of heredity and environment, socialisation, and the critical perspectives of Piaget, Kohlberg and Vygotsky. It also covers child-centred education, the construct of intelligence, gender as a social construct, individual learner differences, assessment for versus of learning, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), inclusive education, and how children think, learn and make errors as part of the learning process.

Languages — Hindi and English

Both carry 15 marks each: one unseen passage tested for comprehension, inference, grammar and verbal ability, combined with the pedagogy of language development — acquisition, the role of listening and speaking, teaching in a diverse classroom, and the use of multilingual classroom resources.

General Studies — Haryana GK, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude

Haryana GK (10 marks) covers state history, current affairs, geography and welfare schemes. Reasoning (10 marks) covers verbal and non-verbal types — analogies, series, coding-decoding and Venn diagrams. Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks) covers number systems, percentages, interest, time-work, algebraic identities, mensuration and data representation — worth noting since it overlaps conceptually with the Mathematics subject-specific section, even though the two are scored separately.

HTET TGT Mathematics: Subject-Specific Syllabus

The 60-mark Mathematics section is organised into three broad areas.

Number System, Arithmetic and Trigonometry

Roman numerals, whole numbers, natural numbers, integers, rational and irrational numbers, real numbers and their properties, and their representation on the number line. LCM and HCF of natural numbers, squares and square roots, cubes and cube roots, and laws of exponents. Ratio and proportion, percentage, decimals, fractions, profit and loss, discount, time and work, direct and indirect proportion, and the unitary method. Comparing quantities, and an introduction to trigonometry and its application to finding heights and distances.

Algebra, Statistics and Probability

Algebraic expressions and identities, factorisation, linear equations in one and two variables, and their graphs. Polynomials, quadratic equations, and arithmetic progressions. Data handling — averages, pie diagrams, bar diagrams, histograms and frequency polygons — and measures of central tendency: mean, median and mode. Probability, approached theoretically.

Geometry, Coordinate Geometry and Mensuration

Euclid’s geometry, lines and angles, lines of symmetry, triangles and their properties, the various centres of a triangle, and perimeter and area. Congruence and similarity of triangles, regular polygons, quadrilaterals, and circles — including area related to circles. Coordinate geometry, Heron’s formula, and the Pythagorean theorem. Visualising solid shapes and the area of polygons. Surface area and volume of cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones and spheres, including combinations of solids — plus subject-related pedagogy.

Of the three papers, Geometry, Coordinate Geometry and Mensuration is the section where candidates tend to lose the maximum number of avoidable marks, simply because the formulae related to surface area and volume of solid shapes go out of active memory faster than algebra does.

Who Is Eligible for HTET TGT Mathematics? Qualification Details

You need to satisfy both of the following:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics as an elective or Honours subject, and Mathematics as a teaching subject in one of the following: BTC/JBT/D.Ed./D.El.Ed, or B.Ed./B.Ed. (Special Education) approved by NCTE norms, or a 4-year B.El.Ed with a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics, or a 4-year integrated BA/B.Sc./B.Com-B.Ed with a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics.
  2. Matriculation, or higher education, with Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject.

This is one of the simpler TGT eligibility structures – unlike Science or Social Studies, there is no additional subject-combination condition heaped on top. The only route to qualification is simply to have Mathematics as your elective/Honours subject, plus the relevant teaching qualification.

Relaxation for SC, BC and differently-abled candidates

For the minimum qualifying mark of 50% the SC, BC and differently-abled candidates are given a relaxation of 5% i.e. 47.5% . The minimum is 45% while the relaxed figure is 42.75% as per Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling in P.V. Indiresan vs Union of India.

A qualification detail worth checking twice

Only teacher-education diplomas or degrees recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) are included. However, the Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B.Ed. (Special Education) courses require recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TGT Mathematics purely a content-based paper, or does it test pedagogy too?

Both. The 60-mark subject-specific part concludes with ‘subject related Pedagogy’ and thus, along with the separate Child Development and Pedagogy section, questions about how to teach mathematical concepts, not just solve them, are also included in the paper.

Does the Mathematics subject-specific syllabus overlap with the Quantitative Aptitude section in General Studies?

Some topics such as percentages, ratios, and mensuration have conceptual overlap, but they are awarded marks separately for 10 and 60 marks respectively. Therefore, good preparation of Quantitative Aptitude does not substitute the dedicated revision of the Mathematics subject.

Can a B.Com graduate with Mathematics apply for this paper?

Yes, provided it is through the 4 year integrated B.Com-B.Ed route with minimum 50% marks in Mathematics + Hindi/Sanskrit language condition.

Is there a separate subject-combination requirement for TGT Mathematics like there is for Science?

No. TGT Science – At least 3 subjects from the approved list. TGT Social Studies – 2 specified subjects. TGT Mathematics – On the basis of Mathematics only as your elective or Honours subject.

Coordinate Geometry and Mensuration is the weakest-revised portion for most of the candidates. So it would be worth initiating your preparation with it instead of keeping it for the last.
